Description
This ebook addresses the literary gap around John 15-17. Most interpretations conclude John chapters 15 through 17 are a continuation of the upper room discussions. Many hold to the position Johnís gospel follows a chronological order. Others hold to the position the gospel consists of three sections, with chapters 15-17 included in the third. However, we assert the contextual evidence supports the events of John 15-17 having occurred earlier, prior to Jesus and the disciples traveling to Jerusalem in the final year of his ministry.

Literary critics questioned the structure of Johnís gospel as early as the second century. Interpreting has proven to be a challenge since the first known commentary by Heracleon (c. 170-80), a member of Valentinian gnostic sect. Yet, the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) used Johnís gospel as their doctrinal source in affirming the divinity of Jesus. Once rejected by biblical scholars, a different attitude exists today with Johnís gospel accepted as an independent, authoritative witness of Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man. Textual issues continue to exist, but centering on internal textual evidence. This monograph addresses the literary gap occurring between chapters 14 and 18.

Intended use: individual study or shared in a small group.
